SPIKY works like a studded snow tire, providing effective protection against slipping and falling on any icy surface. Each tread has small steel spikes which penetrate the ice or snow for safer footing. The spikes are set in tough flanges pressed into a contoured, sandal-like rubber harness that pulls on and off easily over any type shoe or boot by means of a heel tab. Perforations in the harness permit greater stretchability and comfort - even for all day wear. No straps or buckles to fasten. SPIKYs fold to pocket size and come in Zip-loc plastic bags. The rubber is 76% natural rubber and 24% high-grade synthetic rubber, a combination found by laboratory tests to exceed the quality and durability of 100% rubber. The stretchability factor allows the rubber to be stretched 6.5 times its original length without damage or visible changes in the rubber even under microscopic studies. The small spikes are made of Widia Steel, which is much harder than tungsten or carbon steel. Tests on the Widia spikes showed, after the equivalent of 6 years of normal use, less than a fraction of a millimeter was worn down.
